sushi.

I love sushi. I think I could eat it daily. My brother used to be a sushi chef at one of my favorite restaurants, which was great. I’d go sit up at the sushi bar and he’d make me the biggest spicy scallop hand rolls I’ve ever seen. It was glorious.

A few years ago, I attended a hands-on sushi class. It was very informative, really fun and we got to eat some really great sushi. I came home with recipes, a piece of wasabi root and my very own rolling mat:

I have made sushi at home a few times, but cannot say my technique or finished product has improved! I should just say I prefer hand rolls… those are easy!! :)

Heh. I thought of that just now. Hand rolls from here on out, at my house!

Last night, however, along with the hand rolls I made maki sushi rolls from this cast of characters:

Rinse the sushi rice, bring to boil & cover, set to low for 20 minutes. Take off heat, wait 10 minutes, add this:

Innards:

Sushi with mango? One of my very favorites.

Rice onto the seaweed sheet:

is the hardest part:

Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’…  The asparagus roll, ready to be cut:

Another important ingredient:

I made an asparagus roll, a crab salad roll and a mango roll:

Yum. These were all delicious. The mango was perfect, and I always love crab salad.

We also made some hand rolls from the same ingredients:

crab + mango

crab + asparagus

They may not look as pretty as those at the sushi counter, but they taste as good, and it’s a fun process.

I love sushi! However, I do not love paying for it. I’ve been wanting to try making it myself but I’m such a pansy. This does look easy enough though…I mean how hard can an avocado roll be? gulp…

it is SO easy, if you are open to the fact that it May Not Look Like what you’re used to… :)

You should try it!! you don’t even need the roller, although I’m sure they’re not too hard to find…?

I try to always sit at the counter at a sushi restaurant, so I can watch them… it’s fun, and GAAH they make it look so easy! Seriously, the hardest part is getting the rice onto the nori sheet… but if you wet your hands it helps. :)

Try it… :)

I’m so impressed! I’m a huge sushi fan and actually registered for some sushi-related dishes at Crate & Barrel on Sunday. So, it’s settled: if I ever make it to Portland, we’ll have some sushi together!
