The Lunch Box Project

I was lucky to have great food growing up. I may have wished for chocolate rather than the carob in our house, and some of the packaged food that looks tasty to kids rather than scratch-made everything, but I appreciate it now. :) I rarely ate school lunch in grade school, but I do believe the food was actually cooked there – in the school kitchens!

I do not have children, but much of the time feel the need to be a voice for them. Kids need more advocates that are truly out for their best interests, without agenda. One area that has received some positive attention lately (and Needs So Much More) is nutrition, specifically school lunch programs. The quality of the food presented needs drastic improvement. I am also shocked by the amount of time kids actually get to eat their lunch in many schools – some as little as 20 minutes total, from classroom to lunchroom and back! When I was in grade school, our lunch break was an hour, including recess.

Many of you may be familiar with Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. I watched those television episodes more than once, and loved when he finally became friends with the “lunch lady” Alice and the radio dj. He has accomplished some amazing things – far beyond what we saw on television.

Then there is Whole Foods, and their initiative to Put Salad Bars In Schools. This is a great program that I have donated to. We had a salad bar in my high school and I LOVED it. When I stayed on campus for lunch (heh) I would always eat a salad…

I also follow Mrs. Q – a teacher who blogs about eating school lunch every day. She spent last year anonymously documenting her experience with eating the food provided by the lunch program in the school where she teaches, often sharing students reactions to the food. I followed from the start, and it’s been an interesting journey to follow. She continues to blog great things, you should check her out.

Today I am excited to tell you all I am joining the efforts of  The Lunch Box – a resource of “Healthy Tools To Help All Schools”. Among their projects – improving the food in lunch programs, and eliminating flavored milk.

In the next few weeks, The Lunch Box is partnering with OpenSky with a goal to raise $20,000. Want to help?

I have three new products in my shopfor every sale of these three specific products, one dollar will be donated to The Lunch Box project. These products are:

theGoodonYaBar

To be honest, I have not tried these yet – but I’ve ordered and they are already on their way – these organic bars look delicious, and they have ingredients like flax and hemp seeds, maple syrup, vanilla and oats. The three bars include: Breakfast Bar (vegan), Peanut Butter Honey, and Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate. The company motto is “Every Ingredient Matters”, meaning there are no fillers like puffed brown rice. (Puffed brown rice is not bad, it’s just air!)

This sampler pack of bars is just $10 with Free Shipping.

Wee Bee Honey

This raw honey is completely unprocessed. The family run, organic farm is chemical and pesticide free – instead they use essential oils! They do not heat, filter or strain their honey, and say it is like eating straight from the honeycomb! It retains the naturally occurring propolis, enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, making it a great whole food rather than just a sweetener.

Artisana Almond Butter

One of my favorite products! I regularly use many Artisana products, including their Raw Almond Butter. No need for refrigeration, there is always a jar of this on my kitchen counter – I eat a spoonful (or three…) for energy, I add it to my oats and smoothies, I bake with it All The Time.

Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Peanut Free, Non – GMO.

This is where it gets fun! I have some goals – if I meet them I will be donating more to this project.

By the end of August:

If I sell 150 of these three items, I will donate an additional $150 to The Lunch Box.

If I sell 300 of these items, I will donate an additional $300 to The Lunch Box.

If I surpass these goals, I will update and make a new goal! :) I am really excited to be able to help in my own little way – bringing healthy whole foods to the school lunch programs is extremely important and a change that can happen!

Thank you for reading, and thank you in advance for your support.

Love this idea – how sweet!

I watched Jamie Oliver religiously, and I loved what he was doing. Plus, his relationship with Alice was pretty entertaining:) I totally agree about kids needing someone to advocate for them.
