in Basil is a Young Sportsman,Gluten Free,Vegan

yep.  you read that right.

The cast of characters:

gluten free bread
roasted jalapenos
earth balance
Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese
vegan cheese

Melt 1/2 tablespoon earth balance in pan. Spread Tofutti on one slice bread, top with roasted jalapeno, sliced vegan cheese and the other piece of bread. Cook in melted butter until golden on both sides, and cheese is melty.

What is your ideal comfort food?

oh I wanted to watch that but we don’t have cable!! I miss my food network shows. I love the sandwich, especially the jalapeno!!

Reply

4 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 1:06 pm

we recently got rid of cable, and kept only the very base channels AND FN… we don’t get anything in between, I don’t even know how Jason managed to do that…! the jalapeno MAKES this sandwich…

Good looking sandwich. Mmm. My favorite food network chefs are Rachel Ray, Michael Simon, Mario Batali and Bobby of course. It’s about their cooking style.

I LOVE Mario Batali… having dinner at his restaurant for my birthday was one of THE BEST food I have ever eaten…

OMG LOVE this idea. I love jalapeno poppers. I started just making a few at a time in the toaster oven even. My fave FN star is Giada.

Reply

10 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 12:59 pm

I love Giada… except when she is speaking perfect English and then will say one word with “Italian Accent”… makes me laugh. She also talks with her mouth full. ;) but her recipes are all awesome, and she’s got an ADORABLE baby!!

Yay for the Pioneer Woman!! Woo hoo! I don’t know if I could handle those peppers, but I’d sure love to try:)

if you cut out the whole middle, it would be less “heat” and just flavor…

As for my favorite Food Network chef? Alton Brown. Hands down, no contest. I think he’s smart and sexy.

Oh man, delicious!
My favorite Food Network shows are “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” and “Unwrapped” (The second one because I am a science and how-to nerd :) ) I don’t really have a favorite Food Network chef, but I do have a strong dislike for Rachel Ray and Ina Garten. I sort of just want to sock them both in the face so they will be quiet! Harsh? Maybe.

18 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I love “Triple D” (have you seen the Portland episodes? he’s been here 2 or 3 times…) I LOVE Unwrapped and also everything Alton Brown. and I completely understand RR, but Ina??? I love her. and all of her friends! ;)

I love soup! So warm and comforting, especially when it gets so dang cold here.

As for fave chef? I really like Chris Chris Cosentino. I don’t even know if he has a show anymore, but yeah. He’s a lot of fun to watch.

I like him too!! Did you do a blog post sorta recently about his restaurant?? I saw somewhere… his menu looks GOOD and I like his stance on “no substitutions”… chefs blend flavors for a reason, I totally understand not wanting to mess with it! :D

thanks for checking on the spam… it isn’t happening EVERYWHERE, thank goodness! :) mac & cheese is definitely comfort food… and I don’t eat it much either… kinda like this sandwich! :D

Wow, it seems really delicious! You’re great! :D Sandwiches are one of my typical comfort and tv food. Maybe sometimes I skip the butter part because I’d like to be ‘light’, but I know well that butter or olive oil is what makes a sandwich a comfort food! XD

Reply

32 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 12:37 pm

yes, I think that is what turns it into comfort food!! :) I love sandwiches in general, even cold deli sandwiches and wraps…

Reply

33 Liz November 18, 2010 at 7:48 am

Oh my gosh, this sandwich looks amazing!! Seriously, it’s making me hungry. Okay. My fave Food Network chef? Hard to choose. I love Alton Brown’s wit, but how can you not dream of being the Barefoot Contessa? And I’d like to have the Italian cooking skills (and looks) of Giada. Oh, and Bobby and Tyler are cuties. Haha, I could go on and on…

Reply

34 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 12:34 pm

yes yes and yes, I agree with you on all of these points… and I’ll add Jason’s FN girlfriend, Nigella. ;)

i adore cream cheese on grilled sammies, and i always forget to put it on. sooo good!

me too… in wraps, too… since I’m not a big mayo fan, cream cheese is perfect!

You had me at the words “jalepeno popper.” I used to work at a pizza place that sold a deep fried cheese and jalepeno snack. They.were.amazing. I also weighed about 250 pounds when I worked there. Not kidding. Details, details.

I have a feeling, your rendition is somewhat healthier. :p

Reply

48 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 12:26 pm

somewhat… but probably not TOO much. well, it’s not fried!! wee! ;)

Reply

49 Monique November 18, 2010 at 11:22 am

That looks really interesting! I’m not a huge fan of poppers only because I’m a spice wuss :) My fav FN chefs are probably Alton, Aarti and ohh I hope Forgione wins Next Iron Chef!! He has a sexy voice hahaha.

Reply

50 spabettie November 18, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I love Alton, and I agree – I want Forgione to win also!! Maybe you could cut out the middles of the pepper slices, then it’s just a little spicy flavor? :)

How do you cook the jalapenos?

Reply

73 spabettie September 28, 2012 at 3:06 pm

hi Katrina! I’ll update the recipe, sorry – all I said was roasted… to roast any veggie, all I do is chop them (in this case, I cut them in long strips), toss with a bit of olive oil, place a piece of foil on a baking sheet, place jalapenos in middle of foil and bring all sides up, wrapping together like a pouch. cook at 350 degrees for about 23-28 minutes.
