sweet broccoli kale juice

My juicing creativity is back! While I still juice at least once a day, for a while I was juicing from the same choices each day – grapefruit, bell peppers (still love those!), apples, carrots, ginger and beets. Some days I’d go wild and blend the juice with spinach. ;)

Lately we’ve added a couple new additions, one of them being kale!

Another veggie I brought back recently, broccoli. One of my favorite vegetables, I could eat broccoli every day, any way.

The broccoli pulp smells really bad (I suggest you take it outside immediately), but the juice is so good, almost sweet. Add an apple and some carrots, this juice is sweet!

sweet broccoli kale juice

serves two

1/2 bunch kale
1 large “tree” broccoli
5 large carrots
2 Golden Delicious apples

Juice! I add the carrots last, and then take the carrot pulp and run it through the juicer again. It actually generates juice on it’s second pass through! It’s messy, so you can decide whether that’s worth it to you. If I know I’m not saving the pulp to cook with and I’m not in a hurry, I like knowing I squeezed as much as I possibly can.

This is my new favorite juice, and broccoli-hating Jason? LOVES it.

Are you a broccoli fan?

Any suggestions for other crazy combinations? I have a smoothie I’ll share soon that was indeed unique!

I’m a broccoli phaser: sometimes BIG YES! Sometimes, meh. I have to say, the words “sweet”, “broccoli” and “kale” were unexpected to see together… I’m surprised the end result isn’t greener…

I know, I’m surprised (especially with the kale) that it is as sweet as it is… the apples are very sweet, I usually get the tart granny smiths. I suppose the MOST juice comes from the carrots – kale really doesn’t produce much. :)

That is gorgeous. I love raw broccoli so broccoli juice sounds great to me.

broccoli gets a decent amount of juice, too. the flavor is really great!

I love the bright orange color!

And I do like broccoli — roasted (to me) is best but I’ll eat some raw in a salad. I used to love broccoli/cauliflower dipped in ranch dressing.

no way – broccoli?
NOOOOOOOOO!
The only way I can eat my broccoli is with cheese whiz :)
Dang – I’ve actually got a juicer…
I’ve been threatening – but this all just seems so healthy – ha!

I was wondering where all the juices went. Yay! I’m happy they’re back. My mom used to make a basil orange juice that was really good.
Also, tried butter lettuce over the weekend and LOVED IT! Thanks for the recommendation :)

isn’t butter lettuce the best? I’m having a party this weekend and I have THREE on my shopping list!! :D

ha! Jason recently told me he doesn’t mind broccoli raw… he doesn’t like it cooked (the smell?), although I have a recipe I’m making this weekend that may change his mind… it’s a GOOD one I used to make in college and have not since. (I eat most of my steamed broccoli when Jason is at work, out of town, or when we’re at restaurants!! :)

but juicing it? especially the stalks (trunks!)? it’s good!

I love hearing your juicing combos :) I’m always looking for new ideas and inspiration! I usually just use whatever I have on hand, but I always save my kale stems, broccoli stalks and celery hearts for juicing. Have you ever tried juicing a sweet potato? ha! I did recently and that was… interesting! I worked though.

funny you ask! I have a couple big bowls of fruit / veggie on my counter, and there’s a bag of fingerling potatoes next to it… this morning I was looking for things to add to the juice and thought about the potato… ;) I have NOT, though… what was it like? probably adds a nice thickness? I should try one, a sweet one, though.

Reply

23 lindsay July 14, 2011 at 7:04 pm

yes you should try the sweet potato! It makes the juice taste a little more starchy and the sweet potato taste definitely comes through. But overall you don’t get a ton of juice out of them so I feel like I’m wasting a lot :( Although homemade doggie biscuits with sweet potato juicing pulp is a killer combo! ;)

just got home from grocery shopping – saw a sweet potato, thought of you, and picked one up! :D I’ll report back. ;) and YAY, biscuits for Basil will be PERFECT!

Yay! You’ll have to let me know how your sweet potato juice turns out! I have one sweet potato sitting on my counter but I can’t bare to part with it for juicing purposes. lol… Thinking of saving it for sweet potato fries this weekend ;)

When I tried to juice a potato it sounded like my juicer was going to die. It worked, but I’m scared to ever do it again. Lol

I haven’t tried so far, but I’ve read that broccoli is great in smoothies.

Too bad I don’t have a juicer. Too bad we also don’t have kale in Germany (except in winter) – shouldn’t we be kale country?! 8O Boo.

31 spabettie July 14, 2011 at 6:36 pm

juicing broccoli is SO good – I did it a couple months back for a bit, then kinda forgot about it until recently. I wish you had kale, what is up with that?? I wish you had a juicer too!

32 Kath (My Funny Little Life) July 15, 2011 at 3:56 am

I don’t know what’s up with kale! Apparently, people think it’s a boring vegetable. (“Grünkohl”, as it’s called over here, is mostly used in traditional German cooking which many people don’t do themselves anymore. Many other vegetables seem to be a lot fancier. :? )

BOO for you. :( I threw in an extra 2 leaves in our morning juice today, saying “this is for Kath”. Basil just sat there, looking at me, chewing his spinach. ;) one day, you will visit, and we will Celebrate With Kale!!

Hey there…can you direct me to any posts where you talk about how to use the pulp for cooking? I created a really yummy fruit cake with almond crust (the crusts were left over from making almond milk.) But, other than that I am out of ideas. Would love to be able to use the pulp in my cooking.

Thanks!

hi Molly! first of all, YUM your fruitcake sounds very good!

I don’t have too many pulp recipes published, but I have made a carrot cake using pulp, and I make dog treats for Basil and Rosemary all the time – apple peanut butter dog treats. I have made crackers before, (usually a mixture of juice pulp and fresh ground flax seed, other small seeds like sunflower), and in cookies where you replace oil for applesauce? I replace applesauce with apple pulp :)

hope this helps a bit? I juice every day, so I’ll publish more pulp recipes soon!
