Did you know fennel root is heart shaped?
I juiced this licorice flavored vegetable with our juice this morning – continuing with the unique flavors we are enjoying lately.
I juiced the four stalks and part of the bulb, giving the juice a fresh spicy flavor. It produces a fair amount of liquid, similar to celery, and makes the kitchen smell great. While there are several health benefits of fennel, in powder and essential oil form, I wanted to see if the licorice flavor would be prevalent.
It was, and we liked it!
fennel & beet blend
serves two
4 stalks + 1/4 bulb fennel
2 large romaine
6 carrots
2 beets
1 tree broccoli
1 small piece ginger
Juice and enjoy!
Are you a fan of licorice or anise flavors?

I’ve never had fennel b/c I don’t like licorice or anise actually. But I see amazing fennel recipes and think I’m missing out.
maybe just a little fennel?
it’s pretty subtle and fresh – not a heavy licorice flavor…
I am definitely going to give this one a try. Definitely getting tired of the standard juices I have been doing (15 days now of 2 juices a day and a vegan style diet).
hi Jason!! oh boy do I know what you mean! it sometimes gets monotonous, yes? CONGRATS on 15 days, I hope you’re feeling GREAT like we were!!
I didn’t know fennel was heart-shaped. In fact I’ve never used fennel.
But now that I know it’s shaped like a cute little heart…well I want to.
I know – bonus, right? I want to cook with it more, so if you have any ideas…
“Juice and enjoy”….I really want to believe you..but beets and fennel…Travis might kill me if I tried to give him that. Better try it by myself first.
haa – yeah, maybe replace the beet with an apple for him!?
I really like the veggie flavors, so to me this was good… but I totally get that others may not!
Never had fennel! I love that its heart shaped : )
the pic of all your veggies lined up to be juiced is AMAZING! The colors and the clarity of that pic, so beautiful!!
Happy Wednesday! xoxo <3
thank you, Katie!! <3
HEARTS! You know I love this. Those things aren’t a coincidence – they are a reminder to celebrate LOVE. Like the love leaves I found on my walk a few weeks ago. Nature is amazing.
it really is! <3 I knew you would appreciate this…
The hearts are too cute!
I am not a big licorice fan although maybe I’d like blended with other flavors — but on its own, no thanks
licorice isn’t one of my favorites, but the fennel flavor is light and fresh – I want to try cooking with it more!
I love fennel. And your little hearts are so cute, I might even convince Gigi to try it.
fennel is an awesome flavor, right? oooh, do try!! I want to know Gigi likes it too!!
Heart shaped! That is awesome. I had no idea.
me either! it was a surprise discovery when chopping the end off!
I’ve cooked with it and baked with it and yet NEVER noticed the surprise heart. LOVE it! Glad to see the kinks are worked out!
I probably wouldn’t have noticed either, but I chopped off the “end” piece to throw out… and oh, look, a heart!
Every time you post a juice recipe I get inspired to juice more. You making juicing look so pretty!
Uh, that should say you *make*.
aw, thank you Maryea!! I’m glad my juice creations are liked!
I’m not a huge licorice fan, but I do love those glasses!
thanks, Tiff – they are our favorite beer glasses
I love both fennel AND beets….this is perfect!
Great pictures, too
thanks, Averie!
I love licorice and I love fennel but it’s one of those things I only get in restaurants, I never buy and use at home. I need to change that!
I agree, Natalie – I need to cook with these flavors more.
Aww, those are the most lovely fennel hearts!
I like licorice and anise flavors, but not all the time.
me too – and I like the flavors better like this – fresh and subtle, not heavy.
I never ever thought that I would like the taste of fennel until I had it in a salad at a restaurant this past weekend. It was a variation of “beets and heat” with golden beats, goat cheese and fennel drizzled with a honey tabasco! Very different, but VERY delicious!
You REALLY make me want to go buy a juicer! Ughhhhh!
wow, that salad sounds amazing! I bet the fennel was a great flavor in there. we LOOOOOOVE our juicer!
in answer to your question: no. I try though, does that count? Love the hearts – didn’t know that about fennel. Your juice looks awesome. Like the color of ruby grapefruit.
now that is a juice calling my name!!! so full of vibrant color too! love it
I love the color from beets – and yes the flavor of this one is SO fresh – we love it!
