Longtime readers will recognize this sandwich, it’s practically vintage.
Making it’s internet debut back when I was a newbie with this website, the jalapeno popper sandwich has continued to be a favorite at our house and with readers all over.
With good reason – the jalapeno popper is a quintessential party or game day food, right? This is that very thing in sandwich form – gooey cream cheese and melty cheddar take this sandwich to new heights of comfort food.
Comfort with a spicy kick.
I have received three messages recently about this sandwich – two specifically asking for more details, a recipe. Yep, I didn’t even have a real recipe back then, more of what my dear friend Kris calls an ‘assembly’.
jalapeno popper grilled cheese sandwich
rewritten from this recipe… assembly
makes two sandwiches
butter (Earth Balance soy free)
4 slices gluten free bread
2-3 tablespoons cream cheese (Tofutti Better Than…)
2 jalapenos, grilled/roasted
3-4 ounces cheddar cheese (my favorite vegan), grated*
*Grating / shredding cheese helps it melt evenly
Spread cream cheese on two of the four slices of bread. Slice the grilled jalapenos into strips, arrange half of the grilled jalapeno strips over top of cream cheese. Top with grated cheddar and other slice of bread.
Melt butter in skillet, cook sandwiches over medium heat for a minute or so, turning to cook both sides until golden brown and cheese is melted through (lowering heat and placing a lid over pan melts cheese quickly).
Are you a jalapeno popper fan? What is your favorite ‘party’ or game day food?

YAY
first to say it here.
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
xo
THANK YOOOOOUUUU!! XXO
Mmmm… look at that melty cheese oozing out of the crusty bread!! I wish jalapenos didn’t give me a reaction, they’re sooo good. There was this restaurants many years ago (gah!) that served jalapeno poppers with a fruity sauce, like raspberry. I bet this would taste divine with something of the sort!
YES… adding that raspberry sauce would be PERFECT with this!
Which gluten free bread do you use? We use Schar for our daughter but the slices are tiny. We would love to use something else. She refuses to eat the breads that I bake.
much of my gluten free bread I get is from a local bakery here, that is dedicated gluten free. I agree, most of the commercial bread is very small… and the brands we like have to be frozen…
The grilled cheese has long been a staple in my kitchen for a rainy day, quick meal, or, who am I kidding?…just about any occasion! Can’t wait to try this spicy twist to it, thanks!
a perfect rainy day food! but yeah, a perfect food … anytime.
That looks very lovely! I like jalapenos, but it’s not so easy to get my hands on them around here. I’m working on growing my own therefore.
I hope you are able to grow your own, Chris! we always have jalapenos in our garden – the plant would work in a container garden or pot, as well.
Yum is looks amazing, I have been craving a grilled cheese lately, but since I have taken out cheese I haven’t bothered making one. I think I need to try making it with Daiya. Is that what is in the photos or is that real cheddar?
the last photo has a vegan cheese, it was Teese brand (I used this a lot before the new Daiya wedges came out). The top photo was real cheese.
I love jalapenos. I love grilled cheese. I’d love this sandwich
yes, Yes and YES
This is genius! I LOVE poppers but hate making them (and frying them!), so this is the perfect solution!
And just because it’s fun, I have to say it again — Happy Birthday!!
heee – thank you Faith – I had a great birthday!
I know, I love poppers too, and I usually bake mine, but this sandwich?? SO much easier, faster!
Happy Birthday awesome lady!!! These sandwiches look absolutely amazing, I hope you are enjoying one today to celebrate!
thank you Heather! I had a fantastic birthday, and the fun will continue this weekend…
Happy birthday friend! I am NOT a spice person, but this still had me drooling!
ha! well, next time you make a grilled cheese, add the cream cheese at least!
I’ve had this! I got it at the Grilled Cheese food cart over off Glisan, across from Bamboo Sushi. It was delicious! You reminded me that I wanted to recreate it at home.
I love Grilled Cheese Grill.
Oh my gosh YES!!! Love this!
it’s one of our favorites… we don’t indulge in it TOO often, but… mmm sometimes you must!
WANT WANT WANNNNNNT.

I love jalapeno anything too… ANYTHING!
My mans is going to looooove this.
Happy birthday weekend my dear!
thank you so much!! the celebration definitely continues…
I eat jalapeno poppers like candy and am a huge fan of them in sandwich form – thanks for posting your recipe!
Mmm, candy. yep – jalapeno poppers are SO good!
Was it your birthday? Happy b-day! Hope it was great. I’ve been on a jalapeno kick lately. . . trying to use up the harvest from my garden. I love poppers, so I’ll have to adapt to a ‘sandwich” I can eat (ie, no bread!). Great idea.
thank you – yes, my birthday was yesterday, it was really nice! we are celebrating through the weekend, of course
yes, if you have jalapenos to use, I hope you do make a Ricki-friendly sandwich!
I’ve been digging grilled cheeses lately — although mine are usually filled with tomatoes, not screamin’ hot peppers.
There’s just something about a grilled cheese… never gets old. Yours is mouth watering!
PS, I just had a conversation with someone yesterday on ideal places to live… Portland came up, I thought of you!
well it IS ideal…
seriously.
and grilled cheese is ALWAYS good… um, did you know Portland has a HUGE food cart community? there is a “Grilled Cheese Grill cart!! actually TWO of them!
the original cart is a school bus!
YUM! OMG! I will be making these! they look amazing.
thanks, Debbie – hope you enjoy!!
This sandwich must be perfection. I love game food. But I am not a sports fan. I do, however, love the excitement. So my game food usually revolves around board/card games. Anything that can be picked up with my fingers and tossed right into my mouth.
finger food is the best. I like football, but I REALLY like making a bunch of food to serve people who are watching football…
Happy Bday!!!!
O mi gawd. That sandwich looks really super amazing & guilt inducing! It’s like I can feel the earth balance on my fingers.
haa, yep. it is good and I don’t feel guilty.
Happy Birthday!! I’ve had a similar sandwich before with a berry compote and it was too much for me. I can’t hang with the raw jalapeño and I so badly want to. I’ll keep trying though because it looks and sounds so good.
this jalapeno is roasted, could you do that? … although I have made it with raw as well…
Great trip. I’ll roast it first.
oh my gosh — drooling!
right?
yum…
Teehee, your never ending love for a good sandwich
I know… it’s a problem
Yummy! I can’t wait to try this one! Thanks for posting…I just stumbled on your site via Bliss.com.
hi Alicia, thanks for coming by! I hope you enjoy this one – it’s a good one!
Cheers! Kristina
