staying healthy through stress – Wellness Wednesday

I had a different post on deck for today’s Wellness Wednesday, but am sitting here writing this one in real time because… that’s how I’m rolling today.

It has been another extremely stressful and emotional week, for sure. I am exhausted, and really, nothing has even happened yet. After a short night of sleep and a busy day yesterday, all I wanted to do was go to sleep at 4:pm. I had a dinner date with two girlfriends, then class to go to later.

I rallied, I picked myself up, had an extra shot of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and aminos, and was out the door!

Sitting with the girls was not only a therapeutic and much needed break, we laughed and smiled and talked and talked and talked. We enjoyed fresh juice and wonderful raw food for dinner, and I was thankful to be there.

Right now for me, Wellness means staying healthy while under extra stress. That means making sure I am taking my supplements (I have that vitamin post coming soon!), increasing things like zinc and vitamin c and more of my favorite remedy, vibrant fresh juice and veggies.

Wellness also means choosing a few more hours in a day, when you get to spend those hours with the rich company of friends. I came home and relaxed to unwind and catch up with Jason (I call him my soother), and went to sleep early. I slept in until 5:30 today, and I honestly do feel refreshed.

…spending some down time with these two? Very therapeutic.

vitality shots Wellness Wednesday

You may have noticed that recent Wednesdays have been Wellness Wednesdays at spabettie, something new I am doing as I continue to educate myself on all aspects of wellness – inside and out. I am currently enrolled in the Master Veg program offered through NCNM, Portland’s naturopathic college. I could not be more excited – I have already learned so much.

I am officially kicking off Wellness Wednesdays with a Wellness Week, as we transition from our first month of 2013 into the second. While my plant based diet will of course be a focus for Wellness Wednesdays, it will certainly not be the entire series – topics using my background in the spa / wellness industry, fitness (people continue to ask about skiing, tennis and running) are among the posts I have planned.

While many may argue this morning’s grapefruit-ginger vodka toddy fits with Wellness Week – being a popular cure for all that ails you – I do have one that might fit better – my vitality shots. This one is, you know, one that you can drink before you go to work.

Last week I shared my healthy defense juice – so far it has done it’s job to keep me well. This shot should do the same thing – and while it is small, it is mighty! Bright and strong in flavor, intensely invigorating.

juice defense

The news tells us this year the flu is the worst ever.

My schedule is jam packed right now – not complaining at all, I am having FUN – and I am tired.

I am afraid to breathe when someone sneezes or coughs in public.

I am using antibac gel like body lotion.

I’m not a doctor, and I am not going to list immune defense properties of the veggies I am currently inhaling in raw and juiced forms. I will tell you that the first six ingredients of this recipe were picked for their vitamins, minerals, antioxidants – feel good energy for me!

The cherries, mango and pineapple were added for sweet flavor. When I finished taking photos, I blended a banana in as well, taking this well over the 24 ounce mark. One huge jar of deliciousness will hopefully help me fight all the bugs out there.

maca power shots – Wellness Wednesday

January 16, 2013

I begin each day with a juice, sometimes a smoothie. I choose ingredients that bring natural energy, like the superfood maca. If you have heard of maca, chances are you’ve heard the of the purported libido enhancing qualities. No doubt that is a positive benefit, but the first thing I think of is boundless energy. [...]
